![]() ![]() I’m looking into moving into a Leatherman Surge soon. The Center-Drive Plus offers the uncompromising performance you've come to expect of your Gerber multi-tool. The knife and driver get the job done, and I’ve learned what the pliers can and can’t do so I haven’t broken anything on it since. Nine times out of ten I’m either using the pliers, knife or driver. There’s things I like and things I don’t. I picked up a custom made sheath online within a week of owning it. The leather sheath that comes with it was pretty terrible. I don’t even remember what I was doing with it, but it’s still functional so I don’t fault it for that. The “scissors” are a nice addition, but I’ve found them to be a bit difficult to put much pressure on without having to use another pair of pliers, to the point where I just might as well use another tool to do it. I LOVE the driver placement, but if Leatherman made a multi tool that did the same, I’d switch in an instant. They full on shattered on a small wire that my boss then cut with his Leatherman. The cutters broke the first time I used them. The pliers, and specifically the cutters on them, are pretty garbage. It’s ok, but I’ve found things I don’t like about it. Worth considering for the first three alone, but look for something else if you want something with more general utility. TL DR: Great knife, good pliers, out-of-this-world bit driver. The other tools are more or less just tacked on. It’s not my most-used tool but I’d still say it’s worth it if the pliers, blade, and bit driver are your main tools as those are hugely impactful in their implementation. An addicting motion second only to opening the Leatherman Free P4 pliers one-handed.Īll in all, I use this tool purely for ease of deployment of the pliers, the large blade, and that beautiful bit drive. The pliers deployment smoothly and quickly, regardless of manually pushing the slider up or flicking the pliers out. Also, I know you’re not supposed to grab something in the pliers and twist along the center axis of the tool but as I’ve done this, it flexes considerably more than performing the same action on a Leatherman. They cut small wires well enough, kind of just pinch/chew into thicker rubber casings, and while I haven’t actually done this myself I hear they can straight up crack on harder material. The tungsten carbide cutters are.nerve-wracking. It’s too thick at the tip to really be considered a needlenose, though. The pliers, while looking solid, are a little oddly shaped but they work for the most part. I swapped out both bits for ones I use more often. The bit driver is nothing short of amazing, considering you can not only use standard bit sizes but also store those same standardized bits in the tool itself. That being said, the blade is massive, holds an edge decently well, and deploys cleanly and easily. I am unimpressed with the file, it’s just there. The prybar/nail ripper is somewhat useful but also somehow awkward for me to use. The awl is sharp as heck but doesn’t have a thread hole. The inside tools can’t be used without unlocking the pliers first, and I find it difficult to pull them open in the first place. It’s big, it’s chunky, the construction feels a little loose and unrefined, the handles rattle a bit and they don’t stay tightly closed like a Leatherman usually does (they have a little room to squeeze and wiggle).
